The Best Beaches on the Costa del Sol — Ranked Honestly

The Costa del Sol stretches for over 150 km from Malaga Airport (AGP) westward to Gibraltar, and eastward to the dramatic cliffs around Nerja. The beaches vary enormously in character — from the high-energy resort strips of Torremolinos to the secluded coves of Nerja that can only be reached on foot or by kayak. Here is our honest ranking.

The Costa del Sol Beach Guide

Not all Costa del Sol beaches are equal. Some are wide, sandy, and well-serviced; others are narrow and crowded. Some have excellent beach restaurants; others serve overpriced food from plastic sun loungers. This guide tells you the truth about the major beaches — and which ones are worth the journey from Malaga Airport.

1. Nerja Beaches — Best for Character & Beauty

Nerja's beaches are the most varied and interesting on the Costa del Sol. Playa de Burriana is the main beach — wide, sandy, with the legendary El Chiringuito de Burriana restaurant serving outstanding paella. The smaller cove beaches of Calahonda, Playa El Salón, and Maro are more intimate and dramatically beautiful, with clear turquoise water and impressive cliff formations. Nerja is 55 km from Malaga Airport.

Best for: Couples, nature lovers, those wanting authentic character. Avoid if you want non-stop beach club atmosphere.

2. Marbella Beaches — Best for Style & Service

Marbella's beaches combine broad, well-maintained sand with exceptional beach club and restaurant infrastructure. Nikki Beach and Ocean Club near Puerto Banús are world-class beach clubs (expensive, but spectacular). Playa de la Fontanilla in Marbella town is excellent for families with good facilities and multiple beach restaurants. The Golden Mile beaches between Marbella and Puerto Banús offer the most upscale beachfront experience on the coast. Marbella is 60 km from Malaga Airport.

Best for: Luxury travellers, couples, groups who want beach clubs. More expensive than other options.

3. Fuengirola Beach — Best Value for Families

Fuengirola has a long, wide beach (Playa de Fuengirola) that runs the length of the seafront promenade. It is well-maintained, has good facilities, excellent value beach restaurants, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. Less glamorous than Marbella but far more authentic and better value. The train from Malaga Airport reaches Fuengirola in 40 minutes. By car, it is 26 km.

Best for: Families on a budget, first-time visitors to the Costa del Sol, those prioritising value.

4. Benalmádena Beach — Best for Convenience

Benalmádena sits between Torremolinos and Fuengirola, with a 9-km stretch of beaches running along its coast. Playa de Bil-Bil and Playa de Santa Ana near the marina are the most attractive. The marina itself (Puerto Marina) is pleasant for an evening walk. Benalmádena is 16 km from Malaga Airport — the closest major resort to the airport.

Best for: Those prioritising proximity to the airport. Short transfer time.

5. Torremolinos — Liveliest, Most Unpretentious

Torremolinos is the original Costa del Sol resort and the most unapologetically lively. La Carihuela beach is a highlight — the traditional fishing district has excellent seafood restaurants at reasonable prices. The main Playamar and El Bajondillo beaches are wide and sandy with full facilities. Torremolinos is 9 km from Malaga Airport, the closest major resort.

Best for: Those wanting a lively holiday atmosphere, great seafood, and no pretension. Budget-friendly.

6. Estepona Beach — Quietest & Most Spanish

Estepona is 80 km from Malaga Airport and sees fewer British tourists than points east. The town has excellent beaches (Playa de la Rada is beautifully maintained), a charming old town full of flower-lined streets, and a genuinely local atmosphere. If you want the Costa del Sol without the tourist infrastructure, Estepona is the answer.

Best for: Couples, repeat visitors, those wanting a more authentic Spanish experience.
